A-Z promising quotes: Unknown

Life with multiple sclerosis is a faith walk. I really believe that.

MS brings all sorts of unknowns to daily life. The MSer never knows what symptoms might crop up on any given day.

Tomorrow is an unknown for anyone – and most certainly for those battling MS. Pondering the immediate and distant future, we wrestle with questions like these:

• What if the pain grows too great?
• What if the vertigo is intolerable?
• What if my vision vanishes again?
• What if the spasticity increases?
• What if I become incontinent?
• What if I lose the ability to swallow?
• What if I can no longer walk?
• What if I lose my job after too many sick days?
• What if the medications stop working?
• What if my health insurance runs out?
• What if the MRI shows new lesions?
• What if I need extra help and cannot find it?

The “what if’s” can be exhausting. Maybe that’s why life with MS is a faith walk. It takes faith to step away from these questions, again and again, even if we can no longer take steps at all. We do not know what the future holds, but if we hold even a smidgeon of faith, we know Who holds the future.

Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983), a World War II concentration camp survivor and author, said it this way:

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

She knew about fear and trials and uncertainty. Corrie ten Boom and her family, all Dutch Christians, were captured by the Nazis and carted off to concentration camps for hiding Jews in their home. She recounted her story in her 1971 book titled The Hiding Place. (The movie is available on DVD.)

God is bigger than the MS MonSter.

He guides our steps, even when we can’t rise to our feet. And He holds the future. He’s been there, and He knows.
