Humiliating: Describing multiple sclerosis from A to Z

Living with MS can be embarrassing at times.

The MS MonSter is unpredictable, tossing weird symptoms our way without warning and often at the worst possible moments. People with multiple sclerosis can suddenly walk funny, trip or stumble, break out in sweats, drop things, tremble, twitch with muscle spasms, lose control of various bodily functions, fall to the ground, or trip over our own words. We can be overcome with day-ending fatigue, mind-crushing headaches, wild mood swings, or a host of other unpleasant and awkward occurrences.

We may cancel or duck at the last minute from appointments, events, or gatherings we legitimately wanted to attend– or we may forget them altogether.

MS is uncomfortable, off-putting, and sometimes even humiliating. Even if it’s not our fault. Sometimes the biggest challenges of battling the MS MonSter have as much to do with chagrin, personal mortification, embarrassment, and social discomfort as the actual physical symptoms that put us in such predicaments.

  2. I don't have MS, but do suffer from a bone condition which causes really bad arthritis, among other things. So I completely understand the cancelling at the last minute thing. I just have to remmeber that the people that matter most understand.
