Living with M.S.

"Living with M.S. is sort of like training for a long race. The harder you try, and the longer you keep at it, the stronger you become.
Eventually, looking back, you may be amazed at the power you possessed, even when you had no idea it was within your reach." (Linda Ann Nickerson)

Friday

Bright lights, big pity

Stop me, fellow MSers, if you’ve lived this one. I’m tearing my freshly styled hair out!

Looking forward to an hour or so of personal pampering (as well as a super new hairstyle), I stepped into the salon for a trim during a break today.

In mere minutes, it started – the dreaded M.S. migraine.

I should have seen it coming. It’s not like it’s the first time … or the 21st time.

The bright lights, the shiny chrome and mirrors, the loud music, the ever-ringing phones, the competing hair-care product scents, and the scalding hot water in the shampoo bowl are surefire triggers.

And don’t get me started on the hot-air hairstyling tools or the heavy-duty rubber styling capes.

Can you say, Uhthoff, anyone?

Honestly, what used to be a delightful diversion can quickly mutate into a nightmare approaching the discomfort of a dental appointment.

Still, what woman doesn’t relish a new style, even if the process leads to her wearing dark sunglasses for the rest of the day?

So, I’m staying home tonight – on a Friday night. I hope my cat and dog like my rockin’ new hairstyle, because the rest of the world is not gonna see it.

The other half has already crashed for the night. Nope, he didn’t notice the new ‘do or the zoned-out eyes.

The rest of the family is out and about – and will be till I’m racked out.

These professionally styled locks will be bed-crunched and lifeless in the morning. But, hopefully, the migraine will be lifting by then.

Quick. I need a hug. No, wait. M.S. is already doing that. And it’s not pretty.
